We love biology! We love games! Watching tons of nature documentaries, reading science books, going for a walk in the woods. Translating the most interesting aspects of these activities into games; This fascination is what brought the members of Team Niche together. We believe in collaboration. Collaboration between disciplines, collaboration between game developers and players, collaboration between development teams, you name it. Talking to our community and developing our games together with them is what motivates us to keep going. Recently, we founded a collective of nature/biology games indie developers. The collective now consists of 25 international members and is called „Playful Oasis“.
It all started five years ago, when our game designer Philomena couldn't decide whether she wanted to study biology or game design. Game design won, but it was a close call! Even though she had a lot of fun with the systems that game mechanics have to offer, it was impossible to let go of the wonders of biology, especially evolution and zoology. As a result, Philomena decided to create a game about population genetics as her final thesis. The first prototype of Niche was born. After her graduation in autumn 2014, a team formed around the game and has kept improving it ever since.Current project: Niche - a genetics survival
Niche is a mixed genre game about the scientific topic of population genetics. Shape your animal tribe and find an ecological niche for it to life in! The main goal is to keep your tribe alive against all odds, such as hungry predators, climate change and spreading sickness. Resource-management and smart breeding based on real genetics are the main mechanics of Niche. The worlds and animals are procedurally generated. Niche is played from a top-down perspective, giving the player a god-like view over the board. Play-rounds are represented by a day-cycle. All animals of the tribe can be moved and used to perform actions (collecting food, scouting a new field, mating, attacking a predator, etc). Animals have a limited lifespan which means offspring is needed in order to prevent extinction. An animals characteristics are defined by its genes which can be passed on to the next generation. Countless new genes can be found, unlocked, mutated and combined.
